We Believe

Who? In whom do we believe? We believe in the TRIUNE God as revealed to us in the Holy Scriptures: God the Father, God the Son as known as Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit.  This God is holy, all-knowing, present everywhere and all powerful.

What? What do we believe about the triune God? The Bible says:

1.      God the Father created a mature world in 6 normal 24-hour days and continues to preserve it. (Genesis 1-2)

2.      God created Adam and Eve in true righteousness and true holiness.  .  But they fell into sin and ruined man’s perfect relationship with God.  Thus God promised to send his Son, Jesus, to die for the sins of all people and restore that perfect relationship.  This is the Gospel, the good news and the focus of the entire Bible.

3.      God also sends out His Holy Spirit. Everything the Holy Spirit does points people to Jesus as their only Savior.  The Holy Spirit uses the tools of the Gospel: Words of God, Baptism and the Lord’s Supper to create and strengthen our faith in Jesus.

Where? Where did Jesus do all his work? Although Jesus existed from eternity, He became human and was born in Bethlehem.  He taught many people in the land of Israel.  At the end of His ministry, He gave up His life on the cross on Calvary – this was the fulfillment of God’s plan.  God raised Him to life on the third day, known as Easter Sunday today. (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John)

When? When did Jesus live and work? According to the modern calendar, Jesus was born about 4 B.C. and lived on this earth for 33 years.

Why? Why is it so important that we believe in Jesus? From the Bible, we learn that we are totally sinful from birth with no way to believe in God without His help, (Psalm 51:5).   As a result, we would be doomed to hell when we die.  But God’s plan shows us that Jesus has paid the price of all peoples’ sins and grants eternal life in heaven to those who believe. (Romans 6:23)

How? How do we come to believe this message? The Bible says that “Faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the word of Christ,” (Romans 10:17).  We are able to believe this message because the Holy Spirit uses the Gospel to create faith in our hearts.

How Much? How much does salvation cost? The Bible says that we are saved by grace (Ephesians 2:8-9).  That means God has completely restored our relationship with Him through Jesus’ life, death and resurrection.  Now He gives us the benefits.  When one sees what God has done for them, the question “how much” simply becomes “Thanks, God, for all that you have done for me!”

How Long? How long must we believe? The Bible says we are “destined to die once and then face judgment,” (Hebrew 9:27).  God doesn’t tell us when we will die or when He will return. He says, “Always be prepared,” (I Peter 3:15).
